The Dark Mark. In the Potter world, it’s a symbol of fear, horror, and death. The most powerful image in the magical world. Time stopped when it was cast into the sky. The worst nightmare of any witch or wizard.
Right now, this same type of terror is hanging over all of Libya.
Let us take a few moments to think about the dread Libyans are feeling, how at this second, a metaphorical Dark Mark is lingering over their home, threatening their lives, land and loved ones.
Think of Libya.
Ignoring the bit about Libya (b/c this is an old post), this is exactly why I judge people for getting the Dark Mark as a legit tattoo and even more so when they use “Snape had one and he’s a good guy” argument. No, Snape was indifferent until it got personal and I say this as someone who likes Snape. He is a tragic man, filled with regret and this mark reminds him of that. To him, it’s a mark of past mistakes that he can’t fix yet tries to atone for with Harry but it doesn’t change that it is still known as a mark of hate.
Maybe at one point, people could look at it and go “Hey, you speak the language of snakes. Cool.” but just like today, how people can’t look at a swastika and see it as the sign of peace it used to be, instead of symbol of Nazis and hate, or a pentacle and not think “devil-worship or evil witch” instead of the mark of a rather cool and peaceful way of life, the meaning of this image, to me at least, will be one of pain and fear.
You can try to “re-claim” it and make it positive or whatever, and good luck to you, I honestly mean that, because you will need it.
