I know this movie got terrible reviews when it came out, but you should all see it.

1. It is really a tryptich of three films (you should also see Until the End of the World for a set of similar problems/executions)

2. The first third hit my childhood shit so hard, that I almost ran out of the theater in its climatic scene. I have never had to do that before or since.

3. The second third features an astounding performance by Jude Law and stunning visuals that reference everything from the original Tron to Blade Runner to Absolute Beginners. I am neither kidding nor wrong.

4. The second third also raises the question of what memories does a robotic gigolo need to be implanted with to mimic empathy? This question haunts me, and if you see this movie, it will haunt you too. For a long, long time. (If you need a hint, the answer is a big giant trigger, and can a robot consent while he is still being made?)

5. The last third of the film features a ruined New York.

6. It is also about how history and place become story and poetry.

7. The Twin Towers are in it, and there was a huge debate after 9/11 if they should be removed from DVD releases and future airings of the film.

8. The supposed “happy” ending that is weird and incenses lots of people isn’t happy. It’s a terrifying act of delusion/self-delusion. You just have to sit with it. It’s horror, not redemption.

9. A.I. is extremely far from the greatest movie ever made, but you can see how it could have been. Worth it for that alone.

Truly one of the most underrated and overlooked films of all time. Really weird, important, difficult, messy work. You should totally see it. I maybe need to rewatch and do a post about it in my real blog.

OMG yes. I loved this movie, partly because I was obsessed with Kubrick when it came out and was fascinated by the idea of Spielberg putting his stamp on it. It’s endlessly weird and compelling. It gets under your skin, and I remember being really creeped out by the NY we see. Everything felt … so close to being real, even as it was also so bizarre. I dunno. I have the film and haven’t watched it in years. Now I really want to check it out again. Loved Haley Joel Osment, loved Jude Law. And the relationship between HJO’s character and his mother … just wow. Unsettling, which is pretty much any Kubrick film ever made.
